Novie Trump, reliquaries

Novie Trump. Birth. Ceramic.

Again, the reliquary.

The form that contains the sacred. (The stand-in for the bodies of saints and gods. The stand-in for the bodies of each of us.)

Here, rendered eloquently by ceramic artist Novie Trump. Mixing the metaphors of life and death, of flight and home. Of sky and earth. Of the ever-new and the timeless. The old forms of sanctuary windows and triptych altarpieces. The unreadable writing of god on scrolls and tablets.

A reliquary is a vessel made to contain that which is sacred.

Kate Strickland's reliquaries are small in scale, intimate, and made of humble materials. Containing humble materials. Materials made from living things. Materials that are temporal; are temporary; are passing. Things that float, suspended in time, as we do.

Some of them fit in your pocket (the pocket, the everyday reliquary). Some can't be contained in whole universes.

The things that are most precious are perishable; are precious because they are perishable. Because they are impossible to contain for long.
