A single tree, cut into sections and cast in bronze. Each piece like a giant stick bug, following the one in front of it. A broken line.

And inside, the gold. Heartwood removed, the hollow shells of the tree -- the shed skins -- are lined with light.

Mixed media artist Ken HouseGo rarely includes figures in his work. Yet he credits figure drawing in recent years with “building a repertoire of sensitivities and understandings” that makes its way into his layered surfaces.

Witness the textures in his 2012 work Lunar Alignment, Full Moon. They are skins, cut through in places, abraded in others. Even pierced. Scarred, yet luminous; reflecting light. Naked as a bruise, containing the whole rainbow.

"futile, yet necessary"

Artist Motoi Yamamoto began using salt as an art medium in response to his sister's death. In his native Japan, salt is associated with funerals, with healing from grief, with washing sorrows away.

He has described his labour-intensive but ephemeral art as "futile, yet necessary."*
